Unit Portraitist
Inkjet printing, 2024 Photography has been part of my life for years. Even as a combat soldier and a driving instructor during my compulsory military service in the IDF, I used to carry a camera around. Shortly after October 7th I was called up for reserve service as a photographer in the "School of Operational Mobility" unit. This photo series was taken using a medium 6x7 analog format, using a tripod and natural light only. I keep a Sketchbook-log of real-life events that took place – everyday rituals and situations. Afterwards I stage and photograph them according to the availability and willingness of the soldiers around me. To my surprise, they cooperate every single time with my instructions, which often seem peculiar considering the circumstances. I take portraits of soldiers and highlight the difference between reality and how I choose to present it. The photos serve as the portrait of a society in crisis, in a moment when the boundaries between testimony and illusion are unclear.
